very much an oldie
This is a photograph that I took back in 2006 when I took my one and only photography class in college. It was my very last quarter of school and I had finished all of my required classes, yet I still had credits that had to be filled. So, I decided to just take fun classes. I took a French literature class (which ended up being extremely NOT fun), a class on Mockumentaries (yes, I got to watch Spinal Tap as part of my curriculum....jealous?), and a photography class. I'd always liked taking pictures, but never really thought of myself as a photographer. This class definitely opened my eyes up to a whole new world. And the rest, as they say, is history.
This is probably my favorite picture that I took for that class. Unfortunately, this is a poorly scanned in copy of that photo, but you get the general idea. One day, I will go through my huge box of negatives and find this negative, so I can have a better quality copy on my computer. Until then....I hope you enjoy this one!

Let me give you some perspective
Recently, my step-mom Margot sent me this quote from Ansel Adams last interview. She said that it reminded her of my photographic method...and I tend to agree. What do you think?
'I think of Alfred Stieglitz's definition of photography - a paraphrase of what I heard him say many times. In the earlier days, when people were very scornful of what he called "creative photography" or "photography as art," they would ask: "Mr. Stieglitz, how do you go about making the creative photograph?" He would answer, "When I have a desire to photograph, I go out in the world with my camera. I come across something that excites me emotionally and esthetically. I'm creatively excited. I see the picture in my mind's eye and I make the exposure and I give you the print as the equivalent of what I saw and felt." The word "equivalent" is very important. It's two things - what is seen and what is felt about it. That's why the naturalistic element in photography is very important. When you intentionally depart from the natural situation you can get into trouble. Unless you depart far enough.'

Happy Bastille Day!
I had my first commissioned photography job earlier this week. I took pictures of food for a restaurant here in town (MoTav). They are starting a breakfast for dinner night on Monday nights and needed someone to take pictures of the dishes for them. Well, Noah works there part time and said, "Hey, I know someone who takes pictures!" It paid in wine and food rather than money, but a job's a job! I had a great time doing it! In honor of Bastille Day, here's one of the shots that I took: French Toast! If you're in SLO on a Monday night and feel like some delicious breakfast food, stop by MoTav and check it out!

Summer Lovin'

oh really?
What is it about signs that tell you not to do things, that just make you want to do them? Especially no trespassing signs. Seems they're always trying to keep you from going somewhere awesome. Don't worry, I stayed on the path like a good girl. I didn't cause any mischief...well at least not there.

just another manic monday
On Friday, I went out for an adventure. After living in SLO county nearly my whole life, I had never been out on the Bob Jones Trail before that links SLO to Avila Beach. It was a beautiful walk. Depending on which website you go to, it says the trail is anywhere from 1.5-4 miles long. Which means round trip, you're looking at 3-8 miles. I'll say, it definitely felt around 2.5-3 miles one way. It was amazing to start walking in what seems like the middle of nowhere (if you can call a road right next to the highway the middle of nowhere) and walk for awhile and then end up at Avila. I had perfect timing too, as Farmer's Market was just getting started when I walked up. Next time, I think I'll take Noah and my bicycle with me. Hope you enjoy the photos I took along the way. They'll be posted over the next few days.

I want this Sunday
Ok, so this Sunday's isn't necessarily one that I want, but I can think of a few people in my life who would love to own this camera. And unlike those Michael Bay movies, no explosions necessary...just a few friends saying, "cheese!"

Jenny hears a who
So, I know in the book, Horton puts the dust speck onto a clover, but doesn't this look like the "clover" in the cartoon? As soon as I saw it, I instantly thought of Horton Hears a Who. Anyone else really miss Dr Seuss? Still remember being on the school bus riding home when I heard on the radio that he had died. I was a month into second grade. Ahhhh...childhood memories.

Iris you a happy Thursday
Ok, so my "clever" title is kind of lame. But I do wish you a happy Thursday. I know Thursday for me means farmer's market. I do love walking downtown and getting fresh fruit and then sneaking some of it on the way home before Noah gets his hands on it. I hope you have something just as lovely planned for today!

I want that Sunday
You know, if anyone has an extra $45,000 and feels the need to buy this 200 megapixel camera for me, my birthday is coming up in just a few months. Check out the article for more drool inducing facts about the Hasselblad H4D-200MS.

work really does get in the way of a great time
A few days ago, a friend of mine threw her second annual "Lemonade Party." She figures if you can have a tea party, why not a lemonade party? After all, it's summer and too hot for tea anyway. Unfortunately, I had to work. *sad face* Fortunately, a coworker who was able to go, brought me a whole plateful of goodies and a mason jar full of lemonade. *super happy face* I had the best dinner ever that night!
